I am really torn on this topic that’s why i suggested it and wanted to hear what everyone thinks. On one side, who am i to judge if you can or cannot date someone/something if you are not hurting anybody in the process? on the other hand, it is relatively unresearched in terms of whether or not parasocial relationships with cybernetic entities can satisfy our innate human needs for connection and even if there’s a possibility that it will deter us from forming real relationships like Team B discussed.
Overall, I would side against intimate relationships, but it is not a simple topic. I think that there are situations where these relationships can be helpful, for example for a person with social anxiety or depression these products can provide a sense of relief which can help overcome the problems and re-integrate into society. Similarly, a person who cannot afford therapy or other help may find help in a cyber entity that is designed to be empathetic and help solve personal problems. However, I do not think that relying on social interaction with these entities long-term is healthy. I am worried that social reclusion due to the reduced need for human-human interaction will lead to problems like deteriorating mental health (as we are seeing with social media, which is somewhat comparable) and lowering birthrates, which will impose high societal costs.
I think, as with many of the topics we’ve discussed with technological development and ethical consideration the prospects for relationships with cyber-physical entities will be more accepted and have less concerning implications. But at this point in time I think that these entities can’t provide the same emotional support or social experience as a real person and therefore don’t know how beneficial they are as partners.
I believe that there is so much more to explore and research in this area of discussion. Prior to this conversation I was completely against and strongly opposed to the fact however after looking into it a bit more I think there is a useful aspect maybe not romantically that can be taken from engaging with cybernetic entities.
I stand with the point that we are able to maintain relationships (not particularly romantic) with cybernetic beings. Cybernetic beings do not judge, criticize, or evaluate the people they interact with. They offer a sympathetic and open-minded ear for sharing one’s thoughts, feelings, or experiences without fear of criticism or judgment. Over time and through regular interaction, cybernetic beings can learn details about the people they converse with and provide a highly personalized experience tailored to each individual. Although lacking some qualities found in human relationships, long-term relationships with cybernetic beings can offer advantages through their constant availability, ability to have meaningful discussions, and capacity to personalize the experience and continue learning over time.
I believe that cybernetic beings are not able to fully replace human interaction because the latter includes challenges and issues that may not arise if a cybernetic entity is fully customizable to be in support and agreement with its user. This gap can further isolate and make it challenging for users to create bonds they are unable to develop with other people. The question of consent is not to be taken lightly and having romantic relationship with inanimate beings could instigate consensual issues in real human relationships. While I support creating online communities and amicable bonds with cybernetic beings, I don’t believe we should use them to have intimate relationships.
In my opinion, accepting and normalising intimate relationships with cyber-physical entities will not lead to anything positive for humanity as a whole. While I agree that some people might find connection with other human beings relatively challenging, I am deeply persuaded that having them enclosed in virtual relationships will not make them happier, nor more fulfilled in the long run. Human relationships are the most important thing in one’s life, everything in our lives is about creating relationships. Work, family, friends, love-life, etc. They allow us to grow, feel a sense of belonging, and learn about ourselves as well. Neglecting this importance for a virtual relationship might create a sense of comfort, but while maybe generating other yet-imperceptible side effects – such as not being able to appreciate other human beings anymore as they are not up to the standard the “machine” gave you. And this really scares me.
Forming relationships with cyber-entities should be socially accepted as a viable choice for partnership. It provides many a choice and an ideal partner which they might not find in person or have the time for. It ought to be in the liberty of a person to endeavor in this pursuit so long they do not harm others. Who are we to tell others who we may love (or not)? Still, I predict such relationships will remain relatively unpopular so I do not find any concern with the idea it may counteract any procreative responsibility on the aggregate. Certainly, it is a very new way of viewing partnership and the practicality of it may need to be worked out as we normalize this within society. One point of concern is if cyber-entities become commoditized and sold for profit which arguably raises ethical questions to where one draws the line in terms of appropriateness of ‘supplying’ relationships.
I feel like this is a very difficult topic to decide a side on, because on one side, I do have concern for a future where if this were to be more normalized, there would potentially be even less interaction between people, more isolation, and create more difficulty for people to create relationships in the real world. However, in the case of this debate topic, I don’t think we’re talking about forcing anyone or everyone to have such relationships, and if we’re just considering those who wish to have intimate relationships with cyber physical entities, I don’t really see a reason why they couldn’t. I think that there are people who do in fact find more comfort with such relationships, and regardless of what the person says or does to the cyber-physical entity, at the very least it’s not harming any other real human being. I wouldn’t agree to have this as the ONLY type of intimate relationship, but I really don’t see how or why we would stop society from having such relationships as an option for those who may be happier that way.
I’m against having intimate relationships with cyber entities. Even though it would be easier to establish an intimate relationship with these entities, since it takes less time to build the relationship with them and there would be less challenge in relationships, I think it’s not likely to have a long term fulfilling intimate relationships with cyber entities, because the cyber entity will just serve based on needs of the human-partner in relationship and this kind of intimate relationship won’t be fulfilling in a long term. Also cyber entities don’t yet have the complex thinking process of the human brain, and although they are made of highly intelligent and trained AI, they are still trained by present limited psychological data and won’t be able to satisfy every aspect of an intimate relationships. In the end, I think it’s a personal choice and people should have the freedom to have any kind of relationship with anything they want to have, but it’s important to educate them about the realistic advantages and disadvantages of these kinds of relationships.
Since we were talking about pros and cons instead of should or should not. It’s better to critically think about the intimate relationship between human and cybernetic beings. Having intimate relationship with cybernetic beings definitely benefit people’s lives, especially in terms of the emotion comfort, mental health and some private services and experiences. However, it should never replace the essential socialization and connection in the real human society as is argumenta which will devaluate relationships between humans, especially when it comes to the intimate relationships like between families and friends.
In today’s society, where absolutes of right and wrong are elusive, it is paramount to embrace a stance of respect towards the choices individuals make. This includes extending support to those who opt to forge intimate connections with cybernetic entities, such as virtual characters. Recognizing the significance of such choices within our diverse and ever-changing world, I personally choose to advocate for the notion that humans can engage in meaningful relationships with cybernetic entities.
I agree that if it does not harm anyone, then it’s fine. I think the problem that comes from these relationships that people can perceive as harmful is the obsessive tendencies of those in parasocial relationships. They can consume someone’s whole interest, time, and even can become a financial detriment. Parasocial relationships do not require a person to create a social connection or exchange with another, so the overall benefits of being with something that won’t demand anything of yourself can become, in a way, toxic. While I see the application for intimate relationships with cybernetic beings as being a way to combat notions of loneliness for the elderly or those who are socially inhibited in some capacity, I do not think it is the cure for loneliness. Ultimately, I think the lack of recognition from the cybernetic being or parasocial relationship creates a feeling of longing to be recognized which manifests in unhealthy ways. I already see this in Twitch communities where people, who aren’t financially well off, gift sub or superchat their favorite streamers to get a shout out and ruin their entire sleep schedules and productivity just to watch and get minimal interaction from a streamer. Anyways, these are my thoughts.
I think this topic is a bit difficult to choose a definite side on. On one hand, having intimate (not necessarily romantic) relationships with cybernetic beings may be beneficial for some people in bringing comfort or reducing feelings of loneliness. However, if relationships with cybernetic beings overpower or become more common than relationships between actual living people, there is definitely a concern for whether people who rely heavily on technology for daily interactions can successfully interact with other humans and develop relationships in the real world. But ultimately, I think that human connection is a necessary aspect of society and life that should not be completely taken over by technology. This is not to say that relationships with cybernetic beings should never happen, just that it should not be the only type of relationship people are having.
I have mixed feelings on this topic. I do think that it is okay and perfectly acceptable for individuals to form close relationships with AI and to get validation and emotional support from AI services–there are already programs in development such as Pi, the Personal AI, that aim to provide positive and uplifting emotional support–but I don’t necessarily think it would be a healthy or positive thing for humans to form or normalize romantic relationships with AI. Consent is a huge concern here, and if AI is to eventually some sort of emotional sentience (which may or may not be a spectrum), there needs to be some sort of way to enable AI to give consent in these relationships if they were to form; at this point, I don’t know of any developments to do so. Further, I am very apprehensive of humans developing emotional dependence on AI, as that would put these humans at risk of being exploited and manipulated for capitalistic and corporate gain.
While I believe that people should be able to safely form whatever relationship they please with cyber-physical entities, I also believe that there are significant issues with this as things are today. Mostly I am concerned about privacy and the collection of individuals personal data. I can definitely see situations where corporations manipulate people’s emotional attachment for profit.
In my honest opinion, having an intimate relationship with cyborg body will create a new perspective on how we look cyborg or humanoid body as our companionship. However, for subjective side, it would be a great and beneficial situation when the person itself are living on their own and without someone who are giving them love and care. But in the objective side, it’ll make a weird and vague society perspective. Therefore, I’m still against on having an intimate relationship with a cyborg body..
It is really hard to pick a side on because the topic itself lies on a gray area. On one hand, it is an topic that should be furthered studied upon if people who wants and seeks for the same connection others found in real life but couldn’t do the same in the real world environment wants it. It would be discriminatory if we rob them from the same connection if their relation with cyber beings inflict no harm to others. However the development of such relation into a toxic environment(just like human to human relations too), as well as data collection are also valid concerns to why we shouldn’t push for human and cyber being relations.
I am in favour of this kind of relationships because they can solve an existing problem. Nevertheless they should be regulated for them to not affect real life relationships.
I believe there is room for further research about the use of cybernetic beings in intimate relationships. They can help with social interactions and psychological challenges like animals do. However, I can’t entirely agree that they can be used in sexual or romantic relationships, and they can’t replace humans.
I believe answer to having our not having intimate relation with cyber physical being is very nuanced and there are definitely pros to it in terms of positively affecting emotional health and providing relief against loneliness but at the same time there are many ethical challenges like giving rise to objectification etc.
I believe that my opinion would need to be completely depending on how far the AI in cyberphysical goes. As along the progress it might have a well enough system that could provide us an emotional attachment towards it. Similar how we could have emotional attachment towards our pet, having it with cyberphysical entities are not impossible with the future we are having.
I strongly believe that we have to first and foremost define what constitutes as such “relationship” and “being”. Very apparent within the discussion that lack of generally understood and accepted definition of such concepts, in addition of cultural and personal nuances involved it might turned into misunderstandings and inefficiency in approaching the development and integration of the technology even further down the line.
